Mega model

The one of a kind national reality TV show that aims to select the second Mega Model of Nepal is gaining a lot of popularity. Amita Joshi,  Asmita Bhandari, Ayesha Shakya,Dristee Shakya, Jasmin Dangol, Krisha Bajracharya, Nikita Thapa, Pradika Shrestha, Pragati Gurung, Prakriti Shrestha, Pratija Shakya, Pratima Khatiwada, Priyanka Shrestha, Rashmita Maharjan, Rozie Gurung and Sela Gurung, were the 16 beauties who successfully qualified to the next round. The top 16 were taken to Chitwan for 3 days 2 nights. During the stay their individual profiles of all the were shot.

I was inside Image Channel’s studio for the shooting of Marico’s Hair Care presents Image Channel Mega Model season 2. The cameramen were busy setting up their cameras and the technicians occupied with lighting and wiring. The aspiring models started arriving and getting ready. They were changing their shoes; applying and re-applying their makeup; practicing their walks.

I grabbed the opportunity to talk to a few of the contestants about their experiences and ambitions. Ayesha Shakya, 19 says, “Being the next mega model is like a dream, a passion for me and the platform is right. The title is extraordinary in itself.” For Ayesha the role of mega model contestant has been helpful and experimental where each day brings a new challenge. Similarly Nikita Thapa feels upgraded and polished. “Modeling had always been an interest for me and Mega Model has groomed me closer to perfection,” says Nikita. When asked about her favourite moment on the show, she zestfully claims when she was announced for the top 16.

20-year-old Ashmita Bhandari feels more beautiful and confident since her participation and declares that she feels great. When questioned why she should be the next mega model Ashmita confidently answers, “I think I have the potential and the right attitude for a Mega Model.” Pratima Khatiwada, 18, said she was learning a lot of things about modeling from this experience. Pratima wanted the title because it was her aim to become a super model and Mega Model was one of the steps towards her future as one. All the girls wanted the title and they were vying with confidence and hard work to achieve it.

The team was cut down to 15 when Drishtee had to be disqualified. The 15 girls were divided into 5 groups, with three randomly picked girls in each team. The teams were named as Angels, Crystals, Oceans, Divas and Chic. The team had to work together and do the best they could to win immunity and remain safe from elimination.

The first segment aired on 5th September was “Walk the Walk” and the contestants underwent a vigorous ramp walk training session under the mentorship of Sijan Bhattachan and her crew of Bijoux School of Fashion. Sijan Bhattachan’s suggestions and kind corrections were of great help for the contestants to improve and perfect the ramp walk techniques. It was followed by another section called “Photocopy”. The participants were asked to select an interesting pose from a magazine and re-stage it.

The third segment was called “Pressure Props” and was by far the most interesting event partly because of a surprise element for the contestants and partly because each of the girls had to utilize their creativity and bring out the true model in them. A variety of props were numbered and set on a table. The teams were called upon one at a time and each member had to pick a number which decided the props for them. All the girls with their respective prop had to choose a pose and hold on to the pose for a whole 2 minutes.

The surprise was a MAN. After completing the first task the girls had to pose with a male model. It was evident that the contestants were a little nervous at the prospect of having to pose with the model without prior notice. In spite of being caught off guard the participants performed reasonably well. Based on the training session, the Divas group along with Rashmita Shresta from Angels were awarded with immunity. The elimination saw Prashant Tamrakar, Raj Bhai Suwal and Sijan Bhattachan as the judges but as Pradika Shrestha was disqualified nobody was eliminated.

Mallika Sherawat in controversy

Mallika Sherawat, after leaving many disappointed at her performance on New Year’s eve at a suburban hotel in Mumbai, is caught in another controversy. A social worker has approached the Mumbai police seeking an action against the celebrity for wearing ‘obscene clothes’.
Mallika Sherawat recently hit the headlines when she walked off the stage even after charging Rs 75 lakh for 45 minutes-long performance on New Year’s eve at a Mumbai hotel. This time she is hit by an obscenity case for the clothes she wore at the same show. Sherawat wore a skin-suit for her 45-minute performance at the hotel, which has now left the social worker fuming.
The social worker Vinod Jain had seen Sherawat’s performance on certain television channels and was offended. While talking to the news agencies he quoted, “The actress was wearing obscene clothes and dancing in a manner that was very offensive to our culture and women.” He also said that he has approached the Santa Cruz police station to take up the matter since the hotel lies within its jurisdiction. He has sought the filing of a complaint against Sherawat and the organisers of the function under the IPC and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
Additional Commissioner of Police Bipin Bihari said, “We received an application from Jain today. We will study the footage of the event and if the performance attracts the concerned sections of law, the complaint will be filed.”
However, the show was not worth, its charge said people who had coughed up between Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000 for the show.

Celebrity-Inspired Social Networking Sites

Security and the Social Network

Social Networking is one of the hottest trends in IT and while it has the potential to improve communication between a company and its customers, the security risks of co-opting social networking are non-trivial. By Manjari Juneja
As companies leverage sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter in order to connect with their customers and disseminate information about their products and services, they open themselves up to spam attack or data leakage. When social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook first emerged, some businesses viewed them as a distraction from work and banned them.
With the appearance and growing proliferation of other social formats, such as Twitter, companies have begun to embrace this potential for collaboration. Social networking has evolved from personal networking to become a medium for mass communication. Many companies now view sites such as Twitter, Facebook etc. as valuable marketing channels.
Michael Buck, Director, Global SMB Online Business, Dell, said, “SMB customers and businesses are taking advantage of social computing forums such as wikis, blogs, RSS, file sharing and user-generated content. There are great opportunities for customers to collaborate and learn.”
Vipin Tuteja, Executive Director, Marketing and Business support, Xerox India Limited, added, “A recent survey conducted by a leading research organization (Juxtconsult.in) confirms that over 32 million people in India access the Internet daily and over 81% of all Internet users undertake some or the other ‘social interactivity’ activity online. With over 50,000 active bloggers, 11 million Facebook users, 16 million Orkut users and India being ranked ninth in the Twitter list; the social media wave has enthralled every domestic household. Even as we are having these discussions on social media trends, online conversations are happening about Xerox. Therefore social media has evolved as an integral part of our communication strategy globally and in India. As a relatively new, but an important interactive medium of communication, social media is here to stay.”
However, since social networking sites are so user friendly, it makes them all the more dangerous. With e-mail, attackers only had a limited number of ways to harm a computer but social networking sites provide them with a much broader range of options.
That being said, blocking social networking sites is no longer feasible—they are an integral part of marketing and recruitment programs in many companies today. No single detection mechanism can provide complete security: neither signature-based nor behavior-based products are foolproof. However, by implementing a combination of detection mechanisms, the chances of malware slipping by can be drastically reduced.
Ram Krishna G, Technical Head, SANVEI Overseas, added, “Social networking is considered ad-hoc and non-serious communication by people. They do share important information including classified information about a company with their friends. While some of the information can also be shared over the phone (without social networking), the danger of social networking is paramount as the information available to people’s disposal with a computer is enormous.”

Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook

They have variously been called pointless, a waste of time and a passing fad. But social networking websites could be with us for a long time, according to the man behind Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg, the popular website's 23-year-old founder, suggested yesterday that the true advantages of using social sites might take decades to become fully apparent.
"We're talking about the set of connections that everyone has in real life," he said, speaking at a conference in California.
"All we're trying to do is take those connections and map it out. Once we have an accurate model, we can help people to share their information more effectively. But it's going to take 30 years – or at least tens of years – before this becomes a really mature platform."
The website has become one of the darlings of the latest internet boom, growing rapidly and attracting more than 34 million users worldwide since it launched in 2004 from a dorm room at Harvard University.
He told an audience at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco that a stock market flotation was "years off", but refused to be drawn on whether he was preparing to take substantial investment from the likes of Microsoft or Google.
Last year Mr Zuckerberg reportedly rejected a bid from Yahoo! for around $1bn, but a series of reports in recent weeks have suggested that a number of investors are in negotations to buy a stake in Facebook that would value the company in excess of $10bn.
He suggested that the company was preparing to launch its own advertising platform within the next three months, throwing into doubt its relationship with Microsoft – which has an exclusive deal to provide advertising on the social network.
Asked whether he was happy with the deal, which lasts until 2009, Mr Zuckerberg said that Facebook and Microsoft were "both pretty pleased" with the current situation, but refused to comment on other potential investments.

humanity and online social networking

The desire to network is as old as humanity and online social networking sites do seem to solve a need that is different from simply using email, chat and blogging tools separately. However the idea that there will be one big social network platform is the purest form of baloney. The Internet is the platform. Period, end of story. The Facebook social graph platform pitch looks like a classic end of hype cycle attempt to inflate valuation, but as they say, that's another story!
It is an interesting exercise to attempt to theorize how online social networking is likely to evolve once we get past the hype cycle. The best way to start is by looking at the different types of human networks and the motivations that drive them. I see two distinct types of motivation. One is, "I want to communicate better with the people that I already know and trust". The other is, "I want to increase my visibility so that I can connect with more people".

Google Social networking Mobile

new social-networking mobile phone that uses Google software has been launched that integrates online-sharing sites Twitter and Facebook and Flickr.
'The Hero' is made by Taiwanese firm HTC and will go on sale next month.
It is operated using Android, which is the world’s first ‘open-source’ operating system for mobile devices.
The gizmo weighs 4.76oz and measures 4.41 "x 2.21"x 0.57".
It has a 3.2-inch LCD touch-screen with 320x480 HVGA resolution. The battery allows 470mins of talk time and the phone has 512 MB of memory with space for a 16Gb MicroSD card.
Orange said it will be selling the handset in the UK from early July in an exclusive 'graphite' colour.
It will be free to customers who take out a £39.15 per month, 24 month contract.
Advertised with the line 'Be Brave, Be Yourself' - HTC hope it will knock Apple's iPhone 3GS off the top spot.
Users navigate around the handset using a finger, 'flicking' the touchscreen to switch between menu options, in a similar way to Apple's iPhone.

MyBlackBerry

Tomorrow, RIM will launch MyBlackBerry, community site for device owners to rate and review apps, as well as share tips and tricks. While indy sites like BlackBerry Forums and CrackBerry have long been active spaces for discussion, this will be the first officially-sanctioned online space for BlackBerry fanatics.
In the best of all possible worlds (for RIM anyway), MyBlackBerry will serve as a space for customers to provide support for each other. In the worst, MyBlackBerry will languish, as the lack of a vibrant ecosystem around BlackBerry apps becomes more apparent than ever.

Facebook and Controversy

The general problem with social networking online is that just about anyone can know a lot about you in a very short amount of time. Facebook was so successful at dealing with this because its system used your college email address to verify that you are indeed a student at the school. Myspace, Bebo, and others didn't have this check in place and therefore ended up with a completely different atmosphere and user base.
Will Facebook last? Probably, in some form or another, but college students survived for years without it, and they can and most likely will do so again if Facebook continues to alienate its users.

Social Network Features

Some social networks have additional features, such as the ability to create groups that share common interests or affiliations, upload or stream live videos, and hold discussions in forums. Geosocial networking co-opts internet mapping services to organize user participation around geographic features and their attributes.
There is also a trend for more interoperability between social networks led by technologies such as OpenID and OpenSocial.
Lately, mobile social networking has become popular. In most mobile communities, mobile phone users can now create their own profiles, make friends, participate in chat rooms, create chat rooms, hold private conversations, share photos and videos, and share blogs by using their mobile phone. Mobile phone users are basically open to every option that someone sitting on the computer has. Some companies provide wireless services which allow their customers to build their own mobile community and brand it, but one of the most popular wireless services for social networking in North America is Facebook Mobile.

Social Network Structure

Social networking sites tend to share some conventional features. Most often, individual users are encouraged to create profiles containing various information about themselves. Users can often upload pictures of themselves to their profiles, post blog entries for others to read, search for other users with similar interests, and compile and share lists of contacts. In addition, user profiles often have a section dedicated to comments from friends and other users. To protect user privacy, social networks usually have controls that allow users to choose who can view their profile, contact them, add them to their list of contacts, and so on.
In recent years, it has also become common for a wide variety of organizations to create profiles to advertise products and services.

Description of Social Network

A social network is a social structure made up of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes", which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige.

Social network analysis views social relationships in terms of network theory consisting of nodes and ties. Nodes are the individual actors within the networks, and ties are the relationships between the actors. The resulting graph-based structures are often very complex. There can be many kinds of ties between the nodes. Research in a number of academic fields has shown that social networks operate on many levels, from families up to the level of nations, and play a critical role in determining the way problems are solved, organizations are run, and the degree to which individuals succeed in achieving their goals.

In its simplest form, a social network is a map of all of the relevant ties between all the nodes being studied. The network can also be used to measure social capital -- the value that an individual gets from the social network. These concepts are often displayed in a social network diagram, where nodes are the points and ties are the lines.
