Mega model

The one of a kind national reality TV show that aims to select the second Mega Model of Nepal is gaining a lot of popularity. Amita Joshi,  Asmita Bhandari, Ayesha Shakya,Dristee Shakya, Jasmin Dangol, Krisha Bajracharya, Nikita Thapa, Pradika Shrestha, Pragati Gurung, Prakriti Shrestha, Pratija Shakya, Pratima Khatiwada, Priyanka Shrestha, Rashmita Maharjan, Rozie Gurung and Sela Gurung, were the 16 beauties who successfully qualified to the next round. The top 16 were taken to Chitwan for 3 days 2 nights. During the stay their individual profiles of all the were shot.

I was inside Image Channel’s studio for the shooting of Marico’s Hair Care presents Image Channel Mega Model season 2. The cameramen were busy setting up their cameras and the technicians occupied with lighting and wiring. The aspiring models started arriving and getting ready. They were changing their shoes; applying and re-applying their makeup; practicing their walks.

I grabbed the opportunity to talk to a few of the contestants about their experiences and ambitions. Ayesha Shakya, 19 says, “Being the next mega model is like a dream, a passion for me and the platform is right. The title is extraordinary in itself.” For Ayesha the role of mega model contestant has been helpful and experimental where each day brings a new challenge. Similarly Nikita Thapa feels upgraded and polished. “Modeling had always been an interest for me and Mega Model has groomed me closer to perfection,” says Nikita. When asked about her favourite moment on the show, she zestfully claims when she was announced for the top 16.

20-year-old Ashmita Bhandari feels more beautiful and confident since her participation and declares that she feels great. When questioned why she should be the next mega model Ashmita confidently answers, “I think I have the potential and the right attitude for a Mega Model.” Pratima Khatiwada, 18, said she was learning a lot of things about modeling from this experience. Pratima wanted the title because it was her aim to become a super model and Mega Model was one of the steps towards her future as one. All the girls wanted the title and they were vying with confidence and hard work to achieve it.

The team was cut down to 15 when Drishtee had to be disqualified. The 15 girls were divided into 5 groups, with three randomly picked girls in each team. The teams were named as Angels, Crystals, Oceans, Divas and Chic. The team had to work together and do the best they could to win immunity and remain safe from elimination.

The first segment aired on 5th September was “Walk the Walk” and the contestants underwent a vigorous ramp walk training session under the mentorship of Sijan Bhattachan and her crew of Bijoux School of Fashion. Sijan Bhattachan’s suggestions and kind corrections were of great help for the contestants to improve and perfect the ramp walk techniques. It was followed by another section called “Photocopy”. The participants were asked to select an interesting pose from a magazine and re-stage it.

The third segment was called “Pressure Props” and was by far the most interesting event partly because of a surprise element for the contestants and partly because each of the girls had to utilize their creativity and bring out the true model in them. A variety of props were numbered and set on a table. The teams were called upon one at a time and each member had to pick a number which decided the props for them. All the girls with their respective prop had to choose a pose and hold on to the pose for a whole 2 minutes.

The surprise was a MAN. After completing the first task the girls had to pose with a male model. It was evident that the contestants were a little nervous at the prospect of having to pose with the model without prior notice. In spite of being caught off guard the participants performed reasonably well. Based on the training session, the Divas group along with Rashmita Shresta from Angels were awarded with immunity. The elimination saw Prashant Tamrakar, Raj Bhai Suwal and Sijan Bhattachan as the judges but as Pradika Shrestha was disqualified nobody was eliminated.
